Dreams

What if someone, no matter who you are or what you’ve accomplished, would make a movie about you while you’re still living? A living document to show everyone down the line who you really were and what you were about? The script would be yours to make. You could tell any story or share any life lesson with the future. Your legacy would continue to live on through the power of film!

Dreams

“As I dream about movies they won’t make of me when I’m dead.”

These lyrics have haunted me since the first time I heard them back in 1992. Ironically, this was also the year I graduated high school. I was obsessed with leaving my mark upon this Earth. Personally, I called it “having the coolest headstone in the cemetery”, but I’m sure most of you aren’t as dark as I am.

“As I dream about movies they won’t make of me when I’m dead”

Sounds kind of harsh, doesn’t it? But is it? We all want to leave our legacy behind for future generations to learn from and cherish. Everyone wants a street named after them or a building, right? Please tell me I’m not the only one! You mean to tell me you wouldn’t want those you’ve liked the least in this crazy world to have to drive down the (insert name here) Memorial Parkway?

“As I dream about movies they won’t make of me when I’m dead.”

The song is by Bon Jovi and it’s titled Bed of Roses. If you’ve never heard it, you can listen here via YouTube.

Most people today refer to this type of music as Hair Metal or Glam Rock. To us, back in 1992, it was just called rock. From the moment I first heard that line in the song, I questioned myself a lot. What will I do in this world to help others know I was even here? I mean, there are billions of people walking the face of this planet. How will they know who C. Derick Miller was?

Since that time, I’ve been a soldier, I’ve been in law enforcement, I’ve become a freelance journalist for newspapers and magazines, and a professional writer with quite a few novels under his belt. Still, how will future generations of this family know who I was? Sure, they can read one of my books or articles and see who I was as “the writer”, but how will they ever know who I was as a person? None of those identifiers are spoken about in my fiction and I would have to depend on my own children and grandchildren to carry that torch for me into the future.
