My grandfather — “Pops” as we called him — was the greatest man I had ever met. I can’t say he was the greatest man there ever was, but when I was 10 years old, he was my hero. I used to lounge around the floor under his feet when he would sit back in his recliner and tell me about the “good ole days”. I would be fascinated with how great his life was back then because he never told me about the bad times. You see, my grandfather was born in 1910. That means he was 19 years old when the Great Depression hit. But not one time did he ever tell me about almost starving to death, or not having enough money to buy an apple. All of his stories were about the good times.
To me, he was the most courageous and strongest man that ever walked the face of the Earth. The unique thing about my story though is that I realized very early on that he wasn’t going to be with us forever, and asked him to put his stories — his life stories — on tape. Back then — the late 1980’s — camcorders were ridiculously expensive. Because of that, my parents wouldn’t buy me one. We weren’t “rich” — and only rich people had things like that. I did however have a tape recorder. You know the one I’m talking about. You stick a cassette tape in and hit PLAY and REC at the same time.
After all, how could a tape player know that you wanted to move the tape reels while you’re recording unless you hit play at the same time? Anyway, I talked Pops into keeping the tape recorder on his kitchen table and whenever he thought of a “cool story”, he would go over to the kitchen table and hit play and rec at the same time — just for me. I listened to those stories over and over again. When he passed away, I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I was that I had them. I think I wore out the poor cassette tape. I even thought to myself once the internet started becoming more and more commonplace that man, I sure do need to back this tape up.
Well, as you might have imagined, fast forward a lot of years and a lot of moving from house to house, I ended up losing the tape. To say I was devastated would be the understatement of the year. For this reason, I have made it a mandate that we will store ALL of our customers’ stories forever — no extra charge. I have made it my life’s mission to make sure that no one has to ever go through the experience I went through with losing Pops’s tape. In addition to that, I want to help others not only keep the stories and the voices safe, but the likenesses, as well. I would have liked for Pops to have told us in his stories on video about what his life was like “back then”. That way I could have preserved his likeness for posterity's sake — for many generations to come!
It’s too late for Pops now, but think about how nice it would be to see and hear your great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother on video. Unfortunately video wasn’t available six generations ago, but it will be six generations from now! And THAT is what this is all about.
